Isolation Island.

A series of 47 original works by Aidan Phelan, painted in isolation and filmed throughout by the documentary director Charlie Lightening. Every work in the series is unique and held by Causon Daniels.

The artist

Aidan Phelan.

Aidan Phelan is an Irish artist working in spray paint, stencil and oil. He came to painting without a formal art-school route, building a language out of stencil work, layered spray and hand-finished oil until the pictures carried more than technique.

His subject has consistently been the cost that adults impose on children — most completely in the War Child Collection 2025, twenty-five originals held in full by Causon Daniels. That body of work established him with collectors who buy for the long term rather than the moment.

Alongside it he has fought a long battle with addiction. He has been open about it rather than discreet, and it is the reason Isolation Island exists. The decision to remove himself entirely — no company, no supply, no audience — was made as a way of getting clean, and painting was the thing he took with him.

What came back is a series made under conditions almost no contemporary painter works in: alone, on an island, with a camera recording it as it happened.

The film

The series is being documented as it was made.

Charlie Lightening is directing a feature documentary following Aidan through the isolation period: the decision to go, the withdrawal, the work that came out of it, and the return. It is not a film about an art series. It is a film about an addiction fought in public, in which the paintings are the evidence.

For a collector, that matters in a specific way. Every work in this series has a filmed origin. The moment a piece was made, and the state the artist was in when he made it, exists on camera. Provenance of that kind is rare, and it is not something that can be constructed after the fact.

A British filmmaker who has spent two decades inside the lives of very well-known people, usually with a camera running long before anyone else was allowed in.

Lightening's reputation rests on access and trust rather than spectacle — subjects let him film things they would not let anyone else film. That is the register of this documentary.

Precedent

One artist has been through something comparable.

In 2010 Banksy released Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary in which Thierry Guetta — Mr. Brainwash — turned from the man filming street artists into an artist himself. Before the film he had held one self-funded Los Angeles show and had no established auction record at all.

Within weeks of the film's release, Charlie Chaplin Pink sold at Phillips in New York for US$122,500, almost double its high estimate. His work has traded in the tens and hundreds of thousands ever since — US$97,500 for Einstein at Sotheby's New York in 2017 — and one UK dealer reported his primary market prices rising an average of 27% across 2021–2023.

We present this as the only close parallel we are aware of: an artist with a small market, a documentary made about him by a well-known filmmaker, and a step change in what collectors would pay afterwards. It is a precedent, not a projection. Nothing in this prospectus should be read as a forecast of what Isolation Island will be worth, and art should never be bought on the assumption that it will appreciate.

Mr. Brainwash — documented auction highs before and after the film

Exit Through the Gift Shop premiered in January 2010. Before it, Mr. Brainwash had no meaningful auction record; his work sold direct from his own self-funded exhibition. The figures below are the highest publicly recorded hammer results in each period.

The Marco Pierre White collaboration.

Aidan is currently working on a collaboration with Marco Pierre White — the youngest chef ever to be awarded three Michelin stars, and a figure who reshaped what a British kitchen could be.

The pairing is less unlikely than it first sounds. Both men built something at considerable personal cost, both are candid about what that cost was, and both work in a discipline where the finished thing conceals the state of the person who made it.

The collaboration is live and details are being finalised. Collectors on this prospectus will be told first when the work is announced, and holders of Isolation Island originals will be given first sight of anything released from it.
