A signed Banksy Girl with Balloon makes £204,800. Here is why it matters

A signed Girl with Balloon, numbered 129 of 150, has sold at Sotheby's online for £204,800. It is the most recent signed copy of Banksy's best-known print to come to auction, and it sets the tone for the autumn season.

On its own, one lot proves little. What gives this one weight is where it sits: it matches the 2026 median for signed copies across three qualifying sales, and it is 12 per cent above the 2025 median of £183,090. The signed edition is not recovering on the strength of a single bidder. It is recovering across the year.

Girl with Balloon is the image the wider market uses to judge Banksy. It was published by Pictures on Walls in 2004 in two editions: 150 signed and 600 unsigned. No more will be made, and no new Banksy editions have been released since 2017.

Because it is the most traded and most recognised of his prints, it works as a benchmark. When Girl with Balloon firms, the rest of the print market tends to follow. When it weakens, collectors hold back on everything else.

The unsigned edition tells the same story at a lower price. Its 2026 median stands at £88,900, up 8 per cent on £82,550 in 2025, and a copy numbered 397 of 600 made £109,650 at Phillips London this month.

Two editions rising together is a better signal than one rising alone. It suggests broad demand from different kinds of buyer, rather than a few people competing for a single rare copy.

The signed record remains £475,000, set at Christie's online in April 2021. Today's price is about 43 per cent of that. The unsigned peak was £323,965 at Bonhams in March 2021, and the latest unsigned sale sits at around a third of it.

For a seller that gap is painful. For a buyer it is the opportunity. The speculative money of 2021 has gone and prices have reset, but demand has not disappeared. It has returned at a sensible level, and it is now pushing prices up from a floor rather than down from a peak.

Christie's online Banksy sale closes today, 24 September, and it will show whether this strength extends beyond Girl with Balloon. It includes a signed Flower Thrower Triptych estimated at £100,000 to £150,000, a signed Bomb Love at £30,000 to £60,000, Nola at £30,000 to £50,000 and Stop and Search at £20,000 to £30,000.

The Flower Thrower Triptych is the lot to follow. The last regular copy sold at Christie's in March for £177,800, well above today's estimate. If the room bids it past the top of its range again, it will confirm that buyers are paying for the best Banksy prints with conviction. We will report the results as soon as they are published.

Signed Girl with Balloon copies rarely come to market, with only a handful each year. A buyer who waits for the next public sale is competing in the open against everyone else who saw the last one.
