Portrait of Banksy, anonymous contemporary artist

Banksy is the most recognised — and least identified — artist of the modern era. Working anonymously from Bristol since the late 1990s, the artist built a body of stencil work that moved from city walls into major private collections without ever passing through a conventional gallery career.

Girl With Balloon, first sprayed on a Shoreditch wall in 2002, has become the defining image of that practice: a single figure, a single red heart, and a deliberately unresolved gesture. Voted Britain's best-loved artwork, it remains the most consistently traded Banksy motif at auction.

Choose Your Weapon, released in 2010, sets a hooded figure against Keith Haring's barking dog — a direct nod to an earlier generation of artists who took their work to the street. The edition was issued across a series of colourways, each one now collected in its own right.

Identity has never been confirmed, and the artist has consistently declined to confirm it. That anonymity is part of the work rather than a footnote to it.

Causon Daniels holds works from both collections. Provenance and condition details are provided on enquiry; price on application.
