Stik reduced the human figure to six lines and two dots and found that almost nothing was lost. His figures carry posture, tension and tenderness with a precision that far more detailed work rarely reaches.
The work grew out of a period of homelessness in Hackney, and community remains its subject: neighbours, carers, families and the people most easily overlooked. Liberty, painted after his New York mural at Tompkins Square, stands his figure tall on a site with a long history of civil protest.
