Richard Hambleton painted black figures onto the walls of downtown New York in the early 1980s — life-sized, lurching, appearing without warning at the end of an alley. The Shadowman became one of the defining images of the city in that decade.
He showed alongside Basquiat and Haring, then spent years outside the market before a late reappraisal returned the work to serious attention. Horse And Rider carries the same charged brushwork into a single galloping silhouette, while the Beautiful Paintings turn it towards landscape.
