Portrait of Marta Salerno, contemporary artist

Marta Salerno was born near Rome in 1990 and grew up surrounded by craft, carving wood in her father's luthier workshop from the age of six. She trained in painting and sculpture within the Italian academic tradition, taking her grounding from the Renaissance and Baroque masters before pushing deliberately past those conventions.

In 2006 she turned to tattooing and made it a language of her own, drawing freehand directly onto the body without stencils and combining sculptural thinking with draughtsmanship. That approach earned her an international following and still shapes how she builds an image: line first, ornament and colour placed with intent.

In 2025 she relocated to Miami, where she works as both artist and artistic director, developing bespoke concepts for private collectors, architects and interior designers alongside her own paintings. Her canvases carry the same decades of Italian craft into oil and mixed media — figurative, ornamental and physically worked.

Salerno is represented by Causon Daniels. New works are offered first to registered collectors — enquire to be added to the list.
